- Why is the circulation performance of my external filter reducing?

The output reduction of your external filter is most probably not a failure of your appliance.This type of pump system is based on the synchronous motor principle. This means that the impeller rotates at 3000 rpm. synchronised with the frequency of the mains supply or it is idle.Even, for example, fluctuations in the voltage will not affect the revolutions. Due to the constant revolutions, the pump system always gives the same performance.We must differentiate between pump output and circulation performance. Unlike the constant pump output, the circulation performance of the filter declines, as it becomes more contaminated. The running noise can become louder with increased contamination of the filter.The reduction in circulation performance is, from our experience, generally due to:1. dirty filter media2. incorrect filter layer set-up3. hose set-up or other accessories set-up4. contamination in the hose set-up and in the pump head5. incorrect filter start-upWe recommend that you take the following measures to guarantee optimum, trouble-free filter operation:1. Clean the filter media. Remove the filter media from the filter basket and rinse them through in lukewarm water. Because fine filter pads and filter wool felt when washed, they must be changed with each filter cleaning. Otherwise even after the filter cleaning a normal water circulation is notpossible.2. Check that your filter layering set-up is done according to our recommendations, see instruction manual3. Check the hose set-up for possible kinks or restrictions4. Clean the whole hose installation regularly. Clean the inside of the inlet, the outlet as well as the inlet tube, spray bar and the hose connectors on the filter (adapter, shut-off taps) several times in a push-pull motion using an EHEIM Universal Cleaning Brush No. 4005570. Check particularly additionally installed devices such as UV-steriliser, throughflow heaters, components for CO2 input and other installations. Another important task is the regular cleaning of all components in the pump head, through which the water flows. Especially suitable for this purpose is the EHEIM Brush Cleaning Set No. 4009560 (see instruction manual on maintenance and care).5. Never prefill the filter canister with water. Start up the filter by priming, See instruction manual. Please take care, that the water outlet (pressure side “OUT”) during the filling process is situated above the water surface level. This is the optimum way to avoid air entrapment in the filter.
- Why does the pump head become warm?

A warming of the pump head up to ca. 35 C° (warm to the touch) is normal. The heat is generated by the rotation of the impeller.
So that the impeller is cooled and greased during operation, it is necessary to clean the cooling & greasing channel each time you clean the pump chamber.
The cooling & greasing channel is located inside the pump chamber.
To clean the greasing channel, open the locking ring situated on the underside of the filter pump head by turning it clockwise. 
Remove the pump cover, the impeller and the spindle. 
Using EHEIM Cleaning Set Art. No. 4009560 clean the pump chamber (using large brush) and the adjacent greasing channel (using small brush). Re-assemble the pump head and insert it onto the filter canister. Restart the filter, see instruction manual.
- Why is my external filter not pumping out water, when the pump is working?

Perhaps the sealing plug is missing (Art. No. 7343418). This sealing plug seals the cleaning channel from the pump chamber into the hose adapter.
If this plug is missing, water will be pumped back into the canister and not into the aquarium.
